Preface
This book provides an overview of the broad feld of innovation
and business management, and introduces tools to support
innovation management in practice. The topic is approached
using a number of complementary concepts and viewpoints.
Special emphasis has been placed on strategies and busi-
ness models. The underlying assumption is that the differ-
ence between more and less successful offerings can often be
attributed to the design and implementation of the underlying
business model. In other words, while the source and type of
an innovation may vary a lot, a new technology or a new solu-
tion alone does not equal commercial success.
This book has been produced as part of the Innovation
Models and Management Tools (Inno-Mode) research project in
2004-2007. The overall objective of the Inno-Mode project was
to promote innovation management within Finnish industry,
and between Finnish companies and their partners world-wide.
The project was carried out in close association with the frst
Industrial Innovation Management (IIM) training programme in
2004-2006. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland managed
both projects.
Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation,
companies participating in the IIM programme and VTT funded
the Inno-Mode pro ject. The authors want to extend their sin-
cere thanks to the sponsors of this study. Special thanks are
due to Göran Andersson, the manager of the IIM programme,
who granted us access to the IIM seminars; the participants
of the IIM programme who helped us with the case studies;
Prof. Göran Roos of Cranfeld University for interesting discus-
sions and invaluable comments about the manuscript of this
book; Maija-Liisa Ihanus for equally interesting discussions
and editing support during the different phases of the writing
process; Rusty Snyder for the comprehensive language check;
Mervi Sibakov of Technology Industries of Finland Centennial
Foundation for excellent coordination throughout the project;
and, of course, Eira Yrttiaho of Teknologiainfo Teknova Oy for
the publishing contract that we needed!
