Summary: Good Horror That Surprises and Makes You Think Rating: 4

One of the things I like best about the collection "Tales from Someplace Else" of horror stories by W. J. Calabrese is the stories become successively creepier as you read. The collection provides fourteen stories and one poem, many dealing with death or ghosts, but a few with futuristic elements like robots and aliens. The cover provides the gray tone world of ghostly endeavor, but suggests perhaps the story "Eleisha" that is sad with potential love lost. The standout in the collection, in my opinion, is "Random Acts of Kindness" since it deals with supernatural love between a human and some feminine else. The friend of the narrator is the one involved, so the reader gets to see the dilemma presented by this love of human and ghost from several points of view. My second favorite was "Occupant", a story of an unemployed man who one day bought a self-filling diary that becomes a record of his descent into paranoia. Told from an unreliable narrator, the story is very creepy. "Gray Range" has an unusual twist on a war story featuring ghosts who refuse to move off the land. It's one of the earlier stories in the collection and helps establish the tone for the collection, gritty reality at odds with day-to-day events. "Bad Landing" is a neat story involving the thirteenth floor. "Up In Those Hills" uses good voice work and emotion to make it's point about our inability to accept change with grace." "Certain Disturbances" uses medical reports to tell of strange events at a hospital. "Rare Find" is the strangest monkey paw story I'ved ever read, really creative. Overall, I would rate the book four stars because it's cohesiveness relies more on the story genre than on thematic issues. In general, all the stories have a good, nicely paced plot, good settings you expect from horror, and pretty good characterization.
