Molecular Geomicrobiology

Molecular Geomicrobiology Summary:
Publisher: Mineralogical Society of Amer | ISBN 10: 0939950715 | 2006 | PDF | 291 pages | 5.7 MB

As geomicrobiologists, we seek to understand how some of nature's most complex systems work, yet the very complexity we seek to understand has placed many of the insights out of reach. Recent advances in cultivation methodologies, the development of ultrahigh throughput DNA sequencing capabilities, and new methods to assay gene expression and protein function open the way for rapid progress. In the eight years since the first Geomicrobiology volume (Geomicrobiology: Interactions between microbes and minerals; volume 35 in this series) we have transformed into scientists working hand in hand with biochemists, molecular biologists, genome scientists, analytical chemists, and even physicists to reveal the most fundamental molecular-scale underpinnings of biogeochemical systems. Through synthesis achieved by integration of diverse perspectives, skills, and interests, we have begun to learn how organisms mediate chemical transformations, the ways in which the environment determines the architecture of microbial communities, and the interplay between evolution and selection that shapes the biodiversity of the planet. This volume presents chapters written by leaders in the rapidly maturing field we refer to as molecular geomicrobiology. Most of them are relatively young researchers who share their approaches and insights and provide pointers to exciting areas ripe for new advances. This volume ties together themes common to environmental microbiology, earth science, and astrobiology. The resesarch presented here, the associated short course, and the volume production were supported by funding from many sources, notably the Mineralogical Society of America, the Geochemical Society, the US Department of Energy Chemical Sciences Program and the NASA Astrobiology Institute. We thank Jodi Rosso for her editorial contributions.

Introductory Microbiology

Introductory Microbiology Summary:
Oxford Book Company | 2010 | ISBN: 9380179219 | 324 pages | PDF | 23,7 MB

Although microbes were first observed over three hundred years ago, the field of microbiology can be said to be in its infancy relative to older biological disciplines such as zoology and botany. Microbiology could be defined as the study of microorganisms, which are unicellular or cell-cluster micro-scopic organisms. Whilst there are undoubtedly some who fear all microbes due to the association of some microbes with many human illnesses, many microbes are also responsible for many beneficial processes such as plants.

Principles of Microbiology

Principles of Microbiology Summary:
Swastik Publishers | 2009 | ISBN: 8189981277, 9788189981273 | 301 pages | PDF | 13,7 MB

Introduction
Genetic determinants have been shown to consist of deoxyribonucleic
acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). Enzymes are synthesized
under the direction of nucleic acids, and enzymes, thus synthesized,
are responsible for essentially all processes that occur in
microorganisms. Experiments with. both bacteria (pneumococci) and
viruses (radioisotope tests) have established roles of nucleic acids as
determinants in microbial variations.
Microorganisms are excellent for genetic studies, primarily because
of haploid conditions in many of them and the ability of observers to
detect mutations easily and test very large populations in short time
periods. Permanent changes in bacteria can be differentiated from
induced temporary types by fluctuation and replica plate techniques.
Changes in DNA structure are termed mutations, and they occur in
genes of chromosomes. Each gene may have a multiplicity of mutable
sites. Since codons code for amino acids, a missense mutation occurs
when a codon that codes for a new amino acid replaces a codon of
a DNA chain, and a nonsense mutation results from replacement with
a codon that codes for no amino acid. An altered nucleotide sequence
may be restored to its original order by a reverse mutation, or an
altered nucleotide sequence may be compensated for through a
suppressor mutation. Either the DNA structure or the manner in which
RNA is read may be altered.
