Patrons with Nook Simple Touch, Nook Color, Nook Tablet, and Kobo devices use the desktop program Adobe Digital Editions to download and transfer Adobe EPUB eBooks to their devices.

These instructions cover:

• Downloading the EPUB eBook to the desktop/laptop computer
• Transferring the EPUB eBook to the device

Note that Nook Color and Nook Tablet devices are also compatible with the OverDrive Media Console mobile app. The app can be found in and installed from the Nook's app store. The app itself needs to be authorized with an Adobe ID -- even if the device is already authorized with an Adobe ID from being connected to Adobe Digital Editions.

The Nook HD and Nook HD+ are not compatible with Adobe Digital Editions and cannot be used to transfer books from the computer. All eBook transfers are done through the OverDrive Media Console mobile app.

Checking Out an Adobe EPUB with Adobe Digital Editions 2.0

Not all users will need to install Adobe Digital Editions on their Windows or Mac computer and download the eBook to the computer before transferring the title to their device. Any user with an OverDrive Media Console app can skip these instructions and use the instructions for the app. 

Popular devices that require Adobe Digital Editions:

• Nook Simple Touch 
• An older Sony Reader (that doesn’t allow for wireless public library downloads) 
• All Kobo devices. 

Devices that can use ADE or the OverDrive Media Console app:

• Nook Tablet 
• Nook Color 

Note: Nook HD and Nook HD+ users must use the OverDrive Media Console app found in the device’s app store.

Once you've checked out the eBook, you'll be prompted to visit your bookshelf to select a format.

People needing to use Adobe Digital Editions will use either Adobe EPUB or Open EPUB eBooks. At this time, these formats are found under the "Other formats" drop-down. If you find that the title isn't available in the correct format, you can immediately return the title from your bookshelf before selecting a format.

The Firefox browser was used to take these screenshots. Here's what Firefox users will see. Be sure to "Open with Adobe Digital Editions [2.0]" -- never save these files regardless of the browser. 

IE users will "open" the file and (provided you've installed the software) ADE will open immediately. 

Chrome users should look to the lower-left corner of the screen and double-click the file to open with ADE. 

Adobe Digital Editions will open automatically and start downloading the file. Provided you are using high-speed internet, the file should download within 10-15 seconds. Satellite users can expect about a minute to download. The software will show the open book, ready to be read. To transfer the title to your Nook, click the "Library" button in the upper-left corner. 

Plug in your Nook at this time. Notice the "Nook" on the left sidebar. Click, hold, drag, and drop the book cover to the Nook. You'll see a small red icon turn to green when the book is ready to be dropped. 

Be sure to safely eject your Nook before disconnecting the cable from the computer.

OverDrive Media Console for Nook Tablet

There is a new OverDrive Media Console app for the Nook Tablet. Why bother with the OMC app when you can already use the library's digital collection on your Nook? With the OMC app you won't need to download books to your computer and transfer the titles via USB to the Nook Tablet. Instead, after installing the app and authorizing the app with your Adobe ID, you'll be able to browse the mobile NHDB site and download EPUB eBooks and MP3 audiobooks directly to your Nook Tablet and Nook Color.

Here's how to install the OverDrive Media Console (OMC) app on your Nook Tablet or Color:

1. Make sure you are connected to a wireless network. 
2. There are a few different ways to get start "shopping" for apps. The easiest way is to tap raised "n button" at the bottom of your tablet >> Apps. 
3. Once you are viewing the apps on your device >> Tap the link "Shop Now." 
4. At the bottom of the screen, type "OverDrive Media Console" (no quotes) into the "Search Shop" search box. 
5. When the search brings up the OMC app >> Tap "Free," then "Confirm" to start downloading. 
6. Note: You MUST have a credit card associated with your B&N account before you can install this free app. 
7. Once the app downloads, tap "Open" to get started. 
8. The first time the app opens, you get an "About OverDrive Media Console" info page. Here are the highlights: 
• This app works with EPUB ebooks and MP3 (DRM-free) audiobooks. This app will not work with WMA audiobooks in our digital collection. 
• The titles automatically expire on the Nook after two weeks.
• If you don't want to see this message each time you open the app, deselect the "Show at start-up" checkbox.
9. Knowing that our EPUB titles require a device to be authorized with an Adobe ID, I start looking for a way to authorize the OMC app. Sure enough, there is a very, very small icon at the bottom of the screen that looks like three very tiny horizontal lines enclosed by a circle that leads me to "App Settings." You may also be prompted to register the app with your Adobe ID once you start to download your first eBook from OverDrive.
10. At the top of the Settings page, enter your Adobe ID and password. If you don't have an Adobe ID, visit Adobe.com on your device's web browser, sign in, and start a new Adobe account. 
11. After the page reloads, you should see your email address (which is your Adobe ID) and a button that says "Deauthorize." This is how you know that the app is authorized. 
12. There are a few ways to get to the NHDB site. From the app, you can tap that very tiny "Settings" button and chose "Get Books."
13. Once there you are prompted to "Add Library" from a link at the bottom of the screen.
14. Type in your library ZIP code and select your library. This will bring you to the NHDB site. 
15. Alternately, you could open the web browser on your Nook and visit the NHDB site directly. 
16. Log into the mobile NHDB site. 
17. Tap the "Browse" button at the top of the screen >> "Browse all Adobe EPUB eBook Titles"
18. Tab the "Available Now" checkbox and tap "Submit" to view one of the 2000+ titles available to read right now. 
19. Add to the cart >> Proceed to Checkout >> Confirm check out >> Download
20. The OMC app opens and takes over the download. 
21. The title should load within moments. Tap the title to start reading!

Here are some EPUB reading tips: 

• There is a dictionary in the app. Long-press any word to see its definition. 
• Tap in the center of the screen to see how far along you are in the book.
• Tap the center of the screen and then tap "Settings" >> "Reader Settings" to make changes to the brightness, color, fonts, line spacing, etc. 

Quick verdict: If you've installed the OMC app on your Android phone or iPad, you'll be very familiar with the process. It's all very similar. If you are new to installing apps, follow the instructions above and if you have any problems, contact your local public library.

Early eBook Returns: Kobo & Nook Owners

Because you already use Adobe Digital Editions to download and transfer the eBooks, you have everything you need to return the eBook early. Here's what you need to know:

• After transferring an eBook to your Nook or Kobo, don't delete the eBook from Adobe Digital Editions. You'll need the file again when it's time to return it. 
• Once you've finished reading the eBook, open ADE on your computer. 
• From the "Library" view (so you can see the small book covers), place your mouse over the book cover. 
• Notice the small arrow to the upper left of the book cover. 
• Click on that small arrow to return the borrowed item. 

• Now log into the NHDB Website >> My Account >> My Currently Checked Out Items, the book should be gone! (Refresh the page, if necessary.) 

Important: Returning too many eBooks too quickly causes an "Early Return Error" (710) message! Unfortunately I cannot find documentation from Adobe that completely describes the situation that causes this error. This seems to be the standard answer:

When I tried to return an ebook early, I got an error message: "Early Return Error" (error 710)

There is a limit to the number of ebooks that can be returned early within a short period of time. The lock out time depends on how early and how many titles have been returned early in that short period of time. Patrons will have to wait a day or so for the lock out to end. They should still be able to check out Audiobooks.

My Advice: Don't checkout and return more than one eBook immediately. Wait a day or so before returning a second eBook.

User Not Activated Error Message

User Not Activated Error Message on the Nook:

Problem: You can't open/read your book because your Nook tells you the "user is not activated."

* Plug the Nook into the computer and simply delete the Adobe Digital Editions folder. I deleted the two that were on my Nook.
* Unplug the Nook.
* Open ADE on your computer.
* Plug your Nook back in. Window pops up and asks you to authenticate your Nook.
* Click yes (or whatever the prompt is) and you are all set.

Yes, the Nook was originally activated/authenticated before, but it simply stopped working for no obvious reason. The solution is to delete all ADE content on the Nook and to re-authenticate/re-activate it.
