Each has developed its own special flavor; its own architecture, cuisine, customs, music, dress, dialect and even language. The pages of the Eyewitness Travel Guide will give a taste of these areas and show you what there is to see and do.

Italian Journeys

Italian Journeys Summary:

By William Dean Howells
Publisher:   Dodo Press
Number Of Pages:   240
Publication Date:   2007-10-06
ISBN-10 / ASIN:   1406522872
ISBN-13 / EAN:   9781406522877

Product Description:

William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist author and literary critic. He wrote his first novel, Their Wedding Journey, in 1871, but his literary reputation really took off with the realist novel A Modern Instance, published in 1882, which describes the decay of a marriage. His 1885 novel The Rise of Silas Lapham is perhaps his best known, describing the rise and fall of an American entrepreneur in the paint business. His social views were also strongly reflected in the novels Annie Kilburn (1888) and A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890). While known primarily as a novelist, his short story "Editha" (1905) - included in the collection Between the Dark and the Daylight (1907) - appears in many anthologies of American literature. Howells also wrote plays, criticism, and essays about contemporary literary figures such as Ibsen, Zola, Verga, and, especially, Tolstoy, which helped establish their reputations in the United States. He also wrote critically in support of many American writers. It is perhaps in this role that he had his greatest influence.

Death in Ancient China: The Tale Of One Man's Journey (China Studies)

Death in Ancient China: The Tale Of One Man's Journey (China Studies) Summary:
Publisher: Brill Academic Publishers | ISBN: 9004153128 | edition 2006 | PDF | 302 pages | 13,1 mb

This richly illustrated book provides a glimpse into the belief system and the material wealth of the social elite in pre-Imperial China through a close analysis of tomb contents and excavated bamboo texts.
The point of departure is the textual and material evidence found in one tomb of an elite man buried in 316 BCE near a once wealthy middle Yangzi River valley metropolis. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of cosmological symbolism and the nature of the spirit world. The author shows how illness and death were perceived as steps in a spiritual journey from one realm into another. Transmitted textual records are compared with excavated texts. The layout and contents of this multi-chambered tomb are analyzed as are the contents of two texts, a record of divination and sacrifices performed during the last three years of the occupant’s life and a tomb inventory record of mortuary gifts. The texts are fully translated and annotated in the appendices.

Encyclopedia of World Cultures

Encyclopedia of World Cultures Summary:
Macmillan Technical | ISBN: 0028656717 | 2002 | PDF | 424 pages | 13.01 MB

This volume, with one hundred new articles, supplements the award-winning 10-volume Encyclopedia of World Cultures, which was also organized and prepared by the Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) at Yale University, and published by G. K. Hall/Macmillan Library Reference between 1991 and 1996. The volume includes three kinds of entries. One kind is an important culture that was not included, for one reason or another, in the original encyclopedia. These new cultures are located in most regions of the world, but especially in Africa and North America. For example, Rwandans and Barundi are now included. New or updated articles on cultures that have been strongly affected by recent political events are a second kind of entry here. For example, the wars in the former Yugoslavia required expansions and updates of the articles on the Bosnian Muslims, Albanians, and Serbs, and the Afghanistan war called for revisions of the articles on the Tajiks and Uzbeks. Finally, there originally were only short entries on some important cultures, including some that are of classic interest in anthropology (for example, Crow, Zulu). These have now been expanded and updated.

Tourism Development: Economics, Management and Strategy

Tourism Development: Economics, Management and Strategy Summary:

By Alejandro D. Ramos, Pablo S. Jimenez, Bernardina Algieri, Antonio Aquino, Julius Arnegger, Esteban Ruiz Ballesteros, Ludger Brenner
Publisher:   Nova Science Publishers
Number Of Pages:   244
Publication Date:   2008-10
ISBN-10 / ASIN:   1604568534
ISBN-13 / EAN:   9781604568530

Product Description:

Over the last decades, tourism has become a key sector in the world economy: its contribution to balance of payments, incomes and employment has significantly increased over time. While in 1950 international tourism receipts totaled about 2 billion dollars, by 2006 this value had reached 735 billion dollars - about 2 billion dollars a day (World Tourism Barometer, 2007). Nowadays, the sector originates more than one third of world exports of services and over 70 per cent of those in the poorest countries (European Commission, 2007). Tourism is therefore an important driver of growth and prosperity and, particularly within developing countries, the sector is also important for poverty reduction (World Economic Forum, 2007).Mainly dominated by small-medium enterprises, tourism accounts for 4 per cent of the Euro Area's GDP, with about two million enterprises employing about 4 per cent of the total labour force (approximately eight million jobs). When linkages to other sectors are considered, the contribution of tourism to GDP increases to about 11 per cent, and the employment rate reaches about 12 per cent, creating about 24 million jobs. Besides incomes and jobs, tourism has fostered development in the vast majority of European regions; infrastructures built for tourism reasons contribute to local development, and jobs are created or preserved even in areas suffering industrial or rural decline or experiencing urban regeneration (European Commission, 2007). This book provides new research on tourism development from around the globe.

Publication Date:   2007-06-30
ISBN-10 / ASIN:   1933251433
ISBN-13 / EAN:   9781933251431
Summary: More than maps! Wonderful resource for outsiders trying to learn about Carolina
Rating: 5
This book is a collection of short and well researched essays on North and South Carolina that I stumbled on by accident in a local book store. Though the cover looks something like an atlas or a workbook, everything inside is a delight and written with the kind of polish and insight that usually skips geography/history books! The chapters are from well regarded college professors throughout the region and are fairly short. I particularly enjoyed the sections on pre and post Civil War history/geography and on the economic history of the region - the latter is probably the dominant theme of this book. It would be a perfect read for anyone who emigrated to the Carolinas from another part of the country and wants to know more about the region.
