New Views Available: Grid and List Views

There are big changes in how you can view our digital collection! You now have the option of viewing the collection by book cover (the most recent view available) or grid or list view.

List view most closely resembles the earlier site. You are able to see subtitle, series information, the number holds on the title, and a brief description of the book. Nice!

You can switch between collection views by selecting Cover, Grid, or List.

Note that the Cover/Grid/List view buttons have replaced the "Available Now" button. You'll find the option to sort to available titles on the left sidebar now.

This is the view iPhone users will see when selecting available copies.

Returning Books Early from the OverDrive Media Console Mobile App

You never have to return eBooks or audiobooks early to the collection, but some formats can be returned early. The OverDrive Media Console mobile app will automatically block your access when the loan period ends, removing it from your account and prompting you to delete the title from the app. But if you finish the book early, you can return the MP3 audiobook or Adobe EPUB eBook to the collection from the OMC app.

From the app's bookshelf, tap the small plus symbol to return the title. Be sure to return then delete the title. Deleting the title will not remove it from your account.

These instructions apply to all versions of the OverDrive Media Console mobile app.

Returning Incompatible Titles Immediately

Every now and then you might find yourself with an eBook or Audiobook that won't work with your device. It is possible to return the incompatible title to the collection immediately at your bookshelf immediately after checking out the title.

If you have a choice of forms, of course, always double-check the available formats. But if you notice your preferred format isn't available, don't "select and confirm." Look for the "Return Title" button below the format options. (Click on any image to enlarge.)

When there are no additional options, double-check the format before downloading. Notice the "Return Title" option? That option will disappear when you attempt the download the title.

If you accidentally select and confirm or try to download an incompatible format, many of the items can be returned early to the collection.

If you are not able to return the title yourself, contact your local librarian and ask that they submit a support ticket to OverDrive's tech support team

Borrowing and Downloading an Audiobook

Here are the steps to download an audiobook to a Windows computer:

When you find an audiobook that is available for checkout, click on the book cover to learn more about the title, listen to a sample, and borrow the book.

  • Make sure the title is available in the correct format. (It’s easy to get involved browsing the collection and accidentally check out an eBook!)
  • Click the “Borrow” button to check out the audiobook.

  •  The “Borrow” button now shows “Go to Bookshelf.” Click to visit your bookshelf.

  • Select and confirm a format...

  • iPod users are urged to select the MP3 format whenever it is offered as a choice. The MP3 transfer is very fast, whereas the WMA transfer to an iPod takes 2-4 minutes per part to transfer.
  • The audiobook is now checked out to you.
  • Take note of the time you’ll have to enjoy the audiobook.
  • Since you have already downloaded and installed the OverDrive Media Console, click “Download (MP3 Audiobook)."
  • A new dialog box will pop up…
  • Every browser will handle this next action differently:
    • Firefox will ask if you want to “Open with OverDrive Media Console” or “Save.” Always select “Open” and the OMC program will open correctly.
    • Chrome will ask if you where you want to save the file. Select “Desktop” and save the file. It will be temporarily downloaded to the lower-left corner of your browser screen. Click the file name in the lower-left corner and the OMC program will open correctly.
    • Internet Explorer will either automatically open the file with OMC or ask if you wish to open or save the file. Open the file and the OMC program will open the file correctly.
  • Allow the file to download to the default location. Changing the location is problematic!

  • Download all of the parts at once unless you use slower satellite or dial-up internet service, then you might wish to download one part at a time. (Be sure to download additional parts from the “Download” button at the top of the OMC program, not the website.

  • Watch the download process from the bottom-left corner of the OMC software.

  • Once the audiobook has completely downloaded, you can listen to it on your computer, transfer it to a compatible player, or, in some cases, burn it to CDs.

Getting to Know Your Account

In order to add books to your cart or wish list, place a hold, or rate an audiobook, you’ll need to be signed into the site.

  • In order to place a hold, you must submit a valid email address.
  • You will receive an email when the title becomes available to you.
  • You can edit the email address at any time (Account >> Holds >> Edit)
  • You only have 48 hours to check out the title after the hold notification email is sent before the hold is removed and the title becomes available to the next person on the waiting list.
  • You may remove the hold from any audiobook in your “holds” list. (Account >> Holds >> Remove)

Wish lists (Account >> Lists >> Wish List)

  • The wish list is an inactive list. You are not on hold for the title.
  • Use the wish list to keep track of the books you’d like to listen to, but don’t have the time for now.
  • Titles displaying a "red ribbon" have been added to your wish list.
  • Click the “gray ribbon” to add a title to your wish list. The ribbon will turn red.
  • Click a “red ribbon” to remove a title from the wish list. The ribbon will turn gray.

Windows Media Player Security Upgrade: All Windows Operating Systems

Update (11 March 2013): Some users are being prompted to re-upgrade their Windows Media Player Security Upgrade. If the instructions below do not work for you, check out these instructions from OverDrive's tech support team to reset your DRM on the computer

In order to download WMA (Windows Media Audio) audiobooks from our OverDrive collection, you *must* download the titles to a Windows computer and perform a Windows Media Player Security Upgrade. Over the years (and multiple Windows upgrades), I've found different tricks for getting a successful upgrade.

Standard Way to Get WMP Security Upgrade:

With most XP operating systems and, at times, Windows 7, the WMP Security Upgrade can be achieved by  opening the OverDrive Media Console (on a PC) >> Selecting the "Tools" menu >> Windows Media Player Security Upgrade. After clicking the "Ok" button to get the upgrade, the Window Media Player program will open and play a short file. You'll close WMP, saving the file (if desired, when prompted) and you're done.

When the Tools >> WMP Security Upgrade Doesn't Work:

There are times when using Windows 7 and Windows 8 that the upgrade won't work from the OMC program. In cases like this, open Microsoft Internet Explorer by right-clicking the icon from the desktop and "Run as Admin" (DO NOT try to use Firefox or Chrome), visit the following Microsoft site:

    http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp
    • Click "Upgrade" (twice) and let the site connect to the Microsoft server.
    • Open OverDrive Media Console and delete the old copy of the audiobook.
    • Open Windows Explorer and verify that the title has been removed from the following folder: *C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\My Documents\My Media\{name of book}
    • Log into your OverDrive account and re-download the audiobook again.
    • Of note: The Microsoft Website states that if you have trouble listening to the audiobook, restart your computer.

Windows 8 Error: Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing this file
Recently, a patron kept getting the following error message when trying to get the upgrade on his Windows 8 computer after following all of the above steps.
"Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing this file."
The solution is to turn off Internet Explorer's Protected Mode. Here are the steps:

From the "Settings" icon in IE >> Click on Internet Options >> Security tab >> Deselect "Enable Protected Mode."

For helpful screenshots and more instructions, check out this excellent blog post:
    http://blog.jongallant.com/2012/11/windows-media-player-overdrive-error.html#.UPQNPeTHVTI

    Other Solutions:
There are rare instances in which the DRM folder on the computer must be reset. The instructions look daunting, but just follow them step-by-step and it's not bad to do.

We Have a New Look to Our Site!

Notice anything fabulous about the NH Downloadable Books site? It's been freshened up! We hope you like it. :-)

Here are a few of the highlights to the new site:

    • The left sidebar now flies out the right, making that sidebar a lot shorter.

    • Looking for a classic, out of copyright eBook? They can be found in the "Showcase Collections" from the left sidebar.

    • The list of compatible eBook readers and audio players is now located at the top of the left sidebar instead of at the bottom of the page.

    • The text can be enlarged! Click on the A's at the top-right corner of the page.

    • The same terrific sort feature to see the available titles is still available at the top of most pages. Whenever you see it, just click on the check box "Limit to what I can check out now" and press submit. No need to actually "search" for anything.

Let us know what you think!

Early Returns from Apple, Android, and Blackberry Devices! (EPUB eBooks & MP3 Audiobooks Only)

It is possible to return EPUB eBooks and MP3 audiobooks early.

    Here's how it works:

Done with that eBook? Ready to return it? Delete it.  That's right! (It threw me for a loop, too.)
    • From the Bookshelf view >> Edit >> Delete >> Return and Delete (not just delete!)
    That's was easy!

Returning eBooks and audiobooks back into the collection when you've finished reading them helps other people get their books faster and saves the public libraries money on additional duplicate copies -- money we can spend on even more eBooks and audiobooks! Thank you!

Returning eBooks and MP3 Audiobooks Early

All audiobooks and eBooks will be returned in 7 or 14 days to the digital collection. (There are never any late fees!) Some formats can be returned early:

    • Kindle Books
    • Adobe EPUB eBooks
    • OverDrive READ eBooks
    • MP3 Audiobooks
Some formats can never be returned early:
    • WMA Audiobooks
    • Open EPUB eBooks

Browse Early Returns by Device or App
    Browse Early Returns by Format
    • Kindle Books (Immediate Return) (Early Return)
    • Adobe EPUB eBooks
    • OverDrive READ eBook (Instructions)
    • Open EPUB eBook -- Not available
    • MP3 Audiobooks
      • with the Windows version of the OverDrive Media Console program (Instructions)
      • with the Mac version of the OverDrive Media Console program -- Not available
      • with the OverDrive Media Console mobile app (Instructions)
    • WMA Audiobooks -- Not Available

Use caution when returning titles to the collection! Returning too many titles too quickly can result in an "Excessive Activity" error on your OverDrive account. This is typically caused by "browsing" the collection by checking out a book, reading a chapter, deciding that you don't want to read the book, returning the book, and checking out more books -- time after time. Instead of checking out a title to read the first chapter, look to see if the title includes a sample icon to read a little online. (If there is no sample available from OverDrive, check your local library catalog or an online bookseller for a sample, or read reviews from NoveList or Goodreads.)

Early eBook Returns: Kobo & Nook Owners

Because you already use Adobe Digital Editions to download and transfer the eBooks, you have everything you need to return the eBook early. Here's what you need to know:
        • After transferring an eBook to your Nook or Kobo, don't delete the eBook from Adobe Digital Editions. You'll need the file again when it's time to return it.
        • Once you've finished reading the eBook, open ADE on your computer.
        • From the "Library" view (so you can see the small book covers), place your mouse over the book cover.
        • Notice the small arrow to the upper left of the book cover.
        • Click on that small arrow to return the borrowed item.
          • Now log into the NHDB Website >> My Account >> My Currently Checked Out Items, the book should be gone! (Refresh the page, if necessary.)
Important: Returning too many eBooks too quickly causes an "Early Return Error" (710) message! Unfortunately I cannot find documentation from Adobe that completely describes the situation that causes this error. This seems to be the standard answer:

When I tried to return an ebook early, I got an error message: "Early Return Error" (error 710)

There is a limit to the number of ebooks that can be returned early within a short period of time. The lock out time depends on how early and how many titles have been returned early in that short period of time. Patrons will have to wait a day or so for the lock out to end. They should still be able to check out Audiobooks.
          WebJunction: eBooks Troubleshooting

My Advice: Don't checkout and return more than one eBook immediately. Wait a day or so before returning a second eBook.

Returning eBooks Early: Sony Reader Owners

Because you already use both the Sony Reader Library and Adobe Digital Editions software to download and transfer the eBooks, you have everything you need to return the eBook early. Here's what you need to know:
            • After transferring an eBook to your Nook or Kobo, don't delete the eBook from Sony Reader Library. You'll need the file again when it's time to return it.
            • Once you've finished reading the eBook, open Reader Library on your computer.
            • From the "Library" view (so you can see the small book covers), right-click the book cover.
            • Click on "Return Borrowed Item" from the options.

Returning eBooks Early : Apple & Android Owners

            UPDATED May 25, 2011:

It is now possible to return the eBook directly from the App! See the new instructions.

It is still possible to return the eBooks using Adobe Digital Editions, but no longer necessary...

If you use your Apple or Android phone or iPod Touch to read eBooks, there is a good chance that you download the eBooks directly to the device and haven't installed the desktop software, Adobe Digital Editions.

At this time, the mobile version of the OverDrive Media Console does not include an early return feature. To return an eBook before it expires you'll need to install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your Windows or Mac computer. Here's how to install ADE on your PC. The instructions for installing ADE on your Mac are similar and can be found on the Mac slideshow. (Third slideshow from the top.)

            Install Adobe Digital Editions:
            • Confirm the installation and work through the wizard, agreeing with the licensing, etc.
            • Install the software in the default location unless you have a fabulous reason not to.
            • Once the installation is complete, close the wizard.

You should be prompted to authorize your computer with an Adobe ID. You must enter the same Adobe ID you used to authorize the OverDrive Media Console app on your Apple or Android device! This is important. Do not authorize your computer with a different Adobe ID.

If you are not prompted to authorize the computer or if you accidentally close out of that option:
From Adobe Digital Editions >> Library >> Authorize Computer

Excellent! You have successfully installed Adobe Digital Editions and authorized the computer using the same Adobe ID used to authorize the OMC app on your mobile device. By the way, you only need to go through these installation and authorization steps once! The next eBook you return will be much quicker.

In order to return the eBook early, you need a copy of the eBook.
            • Visit the NHDB site >> Log in >> My Account >> My Currently Checked Out Items >> Download the eBook you'd like to return.
Explanation: When downloading the eBook, you're are really looking to open the file with Adobe Digital Editions. Why? Because ADE is the key to unlock the protected digital file.

Download and open the eBook with ADE:
            • Click the blue "Download" button.
            • Using Firefox or Internet Explorer, click "Open" to download and open the file with Adobe Digital Editions.

            • The eBook file will download and open in Adobe Digital Editions.

            To return the eBook:
            • From the "Library" view in Adobe Digital Editions...
            • Place the mouse over the book cover.
            • Notice the small arrow to the upper left of the cover...
            • Click on the arrow.
            • Click on "Return borrowed item."

Now revisit your NHDB account and view your currently checked out items. (Refresh the page, if necessary.) The eBook should be removed from your account.

            Fantastic New Sort (Search) Feature

I am thrilled by the new search feature just implemented in our NHDB site! Here's how to get the most out of the new "Only See Titles With Copies Available" feature. (Or perhaps we should rename it, "Show me what I can get right now." What do you think?) ;-)

When browsing a large collection... (Uff-da. We've got a lot of stuff on our sidebar now, ay?)

Notice the new feature to allow you to search within the results...

Click the "Only show titles with copies available" box and click the "Submit" button. It is not necessary to search for anything.

Now you see only the titles available for immediate checkout.
Did you notice that there were 700 Mysteries and Thrillers to choose from right now?

Emailing eBooks to the OverDrive Media Console App for iOS

If you are like me, you find it easier to browse the NHDB site for eBooks using a desktop computer or laptop than from a mobile device. When I checkout a book from my laptop, I simply download the file, save it somewhere I'll be able to find it, and attach the file to an email to open on my iPod Touch. When I open the file on my iPod Touch, I either open and read it with the official app, OverDrive Media Console, or another free app, The Bluefire Reader. Sometimes the formatting looks better in one app than another. The big bonus of having both apps is that when I finish reading the eBook, it can be returned in a few taps from the Bluefire Reader. (No need to remember to return it from my laptop with Adobe Digital Editions.)

At this time there is no OverDrive Media Console app specifically for iPad (although the iPhone version will "work"), so I recommend the Bluefire Reader for iPad for now at least. Update- There is still no way to return eBooks early using the OverDrive Media Console, so the Bluefire Reader is still helpful in returning eBooks early with the iPad.

UPDATE: If you have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer, when you click the "Download" button, ADE might take over the download and open the title on your computer. Instead of "left-clicking" the download button, right-click (two-finger tap on a Mac) to get more options. From the new pop-up menu, choose "Save link as...," and save the file to a known location.

UPDATE: EPUB eBooks can be returned directly from the OverDrive Media Console app now. See instructions.

The OverDrive Media Console App for Android Phones

This tutorial/presentation is to learn how to install the OverDrive Media Console on Android phones to read the library's eBooks.

Sorry for the not-so-great screenshots of the phone. If anyone finds a screen capture program for Android that doesn't require rooting the phone, let me know!

Go to full screen mode >> Menu (lower-left corner of the presentation) >> Full Screen

            Dial-Up Users and eBooks

Downloading an eBook on dial-up should be a real possiblity. I've downloaded an entire eBook on satellite in much less than one minute. I expect that eBook downloads shouldn't take more than a few minutes. (I think.) If anyone knows, leave a comment.

So the eBooks themselves are relatively small, but the software needed for eBook management and transfer can be too large for some dial up users. Here's what I recommend:
            • Laptop/dial-up users should bring their laptop to a location with high speed Internet to download and install Adobe Digital Editions.
            • Desktop computer users should bring a flash drive to the library and download the installation file for Adobe Digital Editions to that flash drive. At home, connect the flash drive and run the installation file to install Adobe Digital Editions.
            • Here is a link to the Adobe help page that contains the installation file. Scroll down to "Manually Install ADE for Windows."
            • You will need an Internet connection to finish the installation process and authorize their computer with your Adobe ID.
            • An Adobe ID and an authorized computer is the only way to transfer the eBook to a reader or to return the eBook earlier than 14 days.

            Before You Get Started

Your public library is a member of statewide consortium where you'll find thousands of audiobooks and eBooks to borrow.
            • This service can be used from home or anywhere you have access to the Internet.
            • There are never any late fees.

            How This Service Works

            WMA Audiobooks:

            • You'll need to install the OverDrive Media Console for Windows (not Window 8) on your Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 computer in order to download a WMA audiobook.
            • WMA audiobooks cannot be downloaded and used on a Mac computer or directly downloaded to a OMC mobile app.
            • You will also need to perform a Windows Media Player Security Upgrade on your Windows computer before having the right to download the WMA audiobook.
            • WMA audiobooks can be transferred to a WMA-compatible player.
            • WMA audiobooks can be downloaded to the OverDrive Media Console for Windows and transferred (with the assistance of iTunes) to an iPod/iPhone/iPad.
            • WMA audiobooks circulate for 7 or 14 days. The default lending period can be changed in your account settings.
            • WMA audiobooks can never be returned to the collection early.
            • Check out the Audiobooks for Windows handout
            MP3 Audiobooks

            Adobe EPUB eBooks:

            Open EPUB eBooks
            • Open EPUB ebooks are digital versions of printed books that can be read on a variety of electronic reading devices like the Nook, Kobo, iPad, and many different types of phones.
            • The Open EPUB eBooks can be downloaded and read on a PC or a Mac with the use of Adobe Digital Editions or any other software that can open and manage the EPUB format.
            • The Open EPUB eBooks have no DRM (Digital Rights Management).
            • Open EPUB eBooks can be downloaded directly to many devices with the use of the mobile Web site and the OverDrive Media Console mobile app for iOS or Android.
            • Open EPUB titles circulate for 7 or 14 days and cannot be returned early.
            • Check out the Open EPUB eBook instructions

            Kindle Books
            • Kindle Books are digital versions of printed books that can be read on the Kindle device and Kindle apps on various smart phones like the iPhone, Android phones, etc.
            • Most, but not all, of the eBooks in our collection are compatible with Kindles.
            • The Kindle Books must be used with a Kindle device or app. They cannot be transferred to a reader that uses the EPUB format (like the Nook, Kobo, Sony Reader, etc.).
            • The Kindle Books circulate for 7 or 14 days and can be returned early to the collection through the user’s “Manage My Kindle” page.
            • Check out the Kindle Book handout or the Kindle Books for iPad handout.

            OverDrive READ
            • OverDrive READ is a browser-based format that allows you to read the eBook in your desktop or mobile web browser.
            • An Adobe ID is not required.
            • No other apps are required -- just a compatible web browser.
            • Not all web browsers work well with the OverDrive READ format. If the page doesn’t render well, stick with the Kindle Book or EPUB format.
            • OverDrive READ eBooks can be returned early from the NHDB Site >> Account >> Bookshelf, unless another format (Kindle Book or EPUB) has been selected.
            • Check out the iPad and Android instructions for using the OverDrive READ format.

                  • Check out your reserved book within 48 hours. The 48-hour clock starts ticking when the email is sent from OverDrive.
