Beenhakker offers a comprehensive examination of all aspects of risk management--from financial structures and techniques through the development of efficient portfolios and decisions that will minimize investment risks and taxes. The result is a multifaceted approach to risk management, one that advances new theory and involves interaction among various disciplines. Beenhakker takes special care to point out the assumptions underlying developments in risk situations, and his book not only is self-contained in one volume, but also assumes no prior knowledge of the various disciplines upon which it is based and from which it draws its ideas. Professionals with investment responsibilities in both the public and private sectors will find a variety of new concepts explained clearly and simply. Their colleagues in the academic community and students will find the book to be a unique bridge between theory and practice.

Concentration Risk in Credit Portfolios (EAA Series)

Concentration Risk in Credit Portfolios (EAA Series) Summary:
Publisher: Springer | 2008 | ISBN: 3540708693 | Pages: 226 | PDF | 14,01 MB

Modeling and management of credit risk are the main topics within banks and other lending institutions. Historical experience shows that, in particular, concentration of risk in credit portfolios has been one of the major causes of bank distress. Therefore, concentration risk is highly relevant to anyone who wants to go beyond the very basic portfolio credit risk models. The book gives an introduction to credit risk modeling with the aim to measure concentration risks in credit portfolios. Taking the basic principles of credit risk in general as a starting point, several industry models are studied. These allow banks to compute a probability distribution of credit losses at the portfolio level. Besides these industry models the Internal Ratings Based model, on which Basel II is based, is treated. On the basis of these models various methods for the quantification of name and sector concentration risk and the treatment of default contagion are discussed. The book reflects current research in these areas from both an academic and a supervisory perspective

The Tolerability of Risk: A New Framework for Risk Management Summary:
Earthscan Publications Ltd | 2007 | ISBN: 184407398X, 1844076091 | 160 pages | PDF | 1 MB

The book provides a historical and topical perspective on the alternative concept of Tolerability of Risk and its concrete regulatory applications. In the UK, Tolerability of Risk has been developed into a sophisticated framework particularly within the health and safety sectors. It is expected to guide decisionmakers when applying their legal obligation of keeping risks as low as practically reasonable. Could Tolerability of Risk become a wider source of inspiration across the full scope of risk analysis and management? Written by leading academics and risk practitioners from industry and government, the book presents a summary of theoretical perspectives on risk approaches, provides a detailed elicitation of the methods and approaches used to build the Tolerability of Risk framework and looks at the prospect for universal application of the framework across a wide area of risk. From nuclear power to air and environmental pollutants to climate change to drug testing, this strategy may offer a workable, pragmatic solution for balancing risks against the costs involved in controlling them as well as in developing the institutional capacity to make effective decisions in all jurisdictions worldwide. The Tolerability of Risk is essential, cutting-edge reading for all academics, researchers, professionals and decisions makers working in the treacherous landscape of risk analysis, cost-benefit calculations, and risk reduction, management, and regulation.

Model-Driven Risk Analysis: The CORAS Approach

Model-Driven Risk Analysis: The CORAS Approach Summary:

By Mass Soldal Lund, Bjørnar Solhaug, Ketil Stølen

Publisher:
Number Of Pages: 400
Publication Date: 2010-10-21
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 3642123228
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9783642123221
Product Description:

The term “risk” is known from many fields, and we are used to references to contractual risk, economic risk, operational risk, legal risk, security risk, and so forth. We conduct risk analysis, using either offensive or defensive approaches to identify and assess risk. Offensive approaches are concerned with balancing potential gain against risk of investment loss, while defensive approaches are concerned with protecting assets that already exist. In this book, Lund, Solhaug and Stølen focus on defensive risk analysis, and more explicitly on a particular approach called CORAS. CORAS is a model-driven method for defensive risk analysis featuring a tool-supported modelling language specially designed to model risks. Their book serves as an introduction to risk analysis in general, including the central concepts and notions in risk analysis and their relations. The authors’ aim is to support risk analysts in conducting structured and stepwise risk analysis. To this end, the book is divided into three main parts. Part I of the book introduces and demonstrates the central concepts and notation used in CORAS, and is largely example-driven. Part II gives a thorough description of the CORAS method and modelling language. After having completed this part of the book, the reader should know enough to use the method in practice. Finally, Part III addresses issues that require special attention and treatment, but still are often encountered in real-life risk analysis and for which CORAS offers helpful advice and assistance. This part also includes a short presentation of the CORAS tool support. The main target groups of the book are IT practitioners and students at graduate or undergraduate level. They will appreciate a concise introduction into the emerging field of risk analysis, supported by a sound methodology, and completed with numerous examples and detailed guidelines.

Risk Analysis of Complex and Uncertain Systems (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science)

Risk Analysis of Complex and Uncertain Systems (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science) Summary:
Publisher: Springer | 2009 | ISBN 0387890130 | PDF | 464 pages | 8.3 MB

In Risk Analysis of Complex and Uncertain Systems acknowledged risk authority Tony Cox shows all risk practitioners how Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) can be used to improve risk management decisions and policies. It develops and illustrates QRA methods for complex and uncertain biological, engineering, and social systems systems that have behaviors that are just too complex to be modeled accurately in detail with high confidence and shows how they can be applied to applications including assessing and managing risks from chemical carcinogens, antibiotic resistance, mad cow disease, terrorist attacks, and accidental or deliberate failures in telecommunications network infrastructure. Written for a broad range of practitioners, including decision risk analysts, operations researchers and management scientists, quantitative policy analysts, economists, health and safety risk assessors, engineers, and modelers, the book emphasizes methods and strategies for modeling causal relations in complex and uncertain systems to the point at which effective risk management decisions can be made. Individual sections of the book introduce QRA, show how to avoid bad risk analysis, illustrate the principles for doing better analysis, and then show specific applications and extensions.

Risk Analysis and Security Countermeasure Selection

Risk Analysis and Security Countermeasure Selection Summary:
Publisher: CRC Press 2009 | 422 Pages | ISBN: 1420078704 | PDF | 4 MB

When properly conducted, risk analysis enlightens, informs, and illuminates, helping management organize their thinking into properly prioritized, cost-effective action. Poor analysis, on the other hand, usually results in vague programs with no clear direction and no metrics for measurement. Although there is plenty of information on risk analysis, it is rare to find a book that explains this highly complex subject with such startling clarity. Very few, if any, focus on the art of critical thinking and how to best apply it to the task of risk analysis.
The first comprehensive resource to explain how to evaluate the appropriateness of countermeasures, from a cost-effectiveness perspective, Risk Analysis and Security Countermeasure Selection details the entire risk analysis process in language that is easy to understand. It guides readers from basic principles to complex processes in a step-by-step fashion — evaluating DHS–approved risk assessment methods, including CARVER, API/NPRA, RAMCAP, and various Sandia methodologies.
Using numerous case illustrations, the text clearly explains the five core principles of the risk analysis lifecycle. It also supplies readers with a completely adaptable graphic risk analysis tool that is simple to use, can be applied in public or private industries, and works with all DHS–approved methods. This reader-friendly guide provides the tools and insight needed to effectively analyze risks and secure facilities in a broad range of industries, including DHS designated critical infrastructure in the chemical, transportation, energy, telecommunications, and public health sectors.
