Synopsis
Explores the effects of xenobiotics on the nervous system. Details the neurotoxic effects of all major categories of neurotoxicants and elucidates current understanding of the biomolecular mechanisms responsible for their respective toxicities. Covers both traditional and nontraditional neurotoxic agents.

Leon Gussow
This is a comprehensive review of basic scientific studies related to neurotoxicity of many drugs, chemicals, and natural or environmental factors. It covers metals, solvents, agricultural chemicals, natural and environmental agents, and drugs of abuse. The purpose is to explain the effects of mechanisms of major categories of neurotoxicants. The targeted audience consists of academic researchers and students of neurotoxicology. The chapters cover cellular and molecular mechanisms and give scant attention to treatment or clinical correlation. The book features a detailed discussion of previous research, with many references that are quite up-to-date. It also includes discussion of some environmental factors that are not usually thought of as ""neurotoxins"" -- for example, noise, light, temperature, and vibration. At more than a thousand pages in length, this book will be useful mainly as a reference for those specializing in research concerning neurotoxins and for libraries at medical schools active in such research. For the clinician or medical toxicologist, the emphasis on cellular and molecular mechanisms, and slighting of clinical implications, makes this volume less useful. In addition, the authors tend to summarize previously published research without critically analyzing the study methods or validity of any conclusions and to be all-inclusive without focusing on the key points. This book is for specialists only.
